Marketing is not just advertising, its basically a catchall word for business. It involves getting the product to the consumer, so it includes production, pricing, promotion, and placement. These are often referred to as the 4Ps of the marketing mix.

Selling by advertising the product or thing. Could be tin of beans or a person like a pop star.
In a few words, you will have to do, is: advertising, sales promotion, publicity, and personal selling, and refers to the various methods of promoting the product, brand, or company. Ways of communications, may be ANY of existing: Media, internet, etc.
Marketing isn't 'everything to do with business' nor is it just sales and advertising its about knowing what is different about your product (or how it could be different, or how you want it to appear to be different) e.g., is it cheaper or better or unique and who will buy it (teenagers? professionals? the elderly? men under 30?). Once you have worked that oout you can then decide what advertising is appropriate and how you should sell it: retail? mail order? ebay? car boot sale!? There are 3 recognised approaches: cost leadership, differentiation or niche....read a book on business planning: that will give a quick summary (later you can try books specifically on marketing)
Marketing very simply is showing people how your product or service will benefit them, for example say you have a music system, there is no point in telling them about all the technology in the unit, but show them how the sound quality could make their lounge sound as if they were in a concert hall, then if that appeals to them they are more than likely to purchase the product.
